Mestre Paulo Batuta, began training Capoeira, in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil in 1985. He studied under Mestre Milton in the Regional Baiana school, and later with Mestre Cicero in the Cordão de Ouro Group. In 1997 he came to San Diego and joined Capoeira Mandinga, under Mestre Marcelo. He has been directing the Capoeira Mandinga San Diego school since 1999. He also leads the Capoeira Mandinga schools in Las Vegas, Guam, and Mexicali. In addition to Capoeira, Paulo Batuta runs the San Diego chapter of Capoeira Institute, a non-profit organization that has various projects promoting Brazilian arts and culture, such as the Brazilian Day San Diego Street Fair and Parade, and afterschool programs.
